About Hornets in the UK

Hornets are a larger member of the wasp family and are considered a hazardous pest in the UK. Their behaviour and lifecycle are very similar to common wasps, and they often build nests in loft spaces, sheds, wall cavities, and other quiet, sheltered areas.

Although hornet nests are usually smaller than typical wasp nests, the size and strength of hornets make them a greater health risk due to their powerful and painful stings.

How to Identify a Hornet Nest

Hornets are often described as “wasps on steroids” due to their larger size and more aggressive appearance. They can easily enter homes, gardens, and commercial properties, especially during warmer months.

Common Signs of a Hornet Infestation:

• Frequent hornet sightings around your property
• Increased activity during hot weather
• Hornets attracted to food, sugary drinks, and waste areas
• Hornets flying in and out of rooflines, gutters, or brickwork
• A visible flight path leading to a specific entry point

A steady stream of hornets entering small gaps near roof tiles, guttering, or wall cavities is a strong indication of an active nest and breeding site nearby.
